Building cooling: Technologies and strategies for reducing energy and power demand, Greece

Type of Services

In the framework of the project, a detailed feasibility study on the implementation of certain technologies and strategies for reducing the cost of space cooling was carried out for a certain building belonging to the City of Athens. Moreover, the report submitted to the municipal administration provided information on the appropriate technologies and strategies that can be applied in the majority of Athens buildings leading to a significant reduction in energy and power demand for space cooling. The feasibility of implementing these technologies and strategies in a wider scale in Athens was also included in the report along with a relevant action plan. In the course of the project, training was also provided on systematic basis to the engineers and decision makers of the City of Athens.

Description

This project study, completed in the framework of DG XVII - PERU Programme (Regional and Urban Energy Planning), aimed at examining the feasibility of using new technologies and strategies for reducing energy and power demand in building cooling applications for buildings based in Athens. The main objectives of the project were the following:

  • identification of strategies and actions, suitable for application taking into account the specific climate characteristics and building typology prevailed in Athens area;
  • estimation of the energy and environmental benefits arising from the application of relevant actions;
  • cost estimation of the various options selected;
  • elaboration of a detailed feasibility study on the application of the selected technologies and strategies in certain building being typical and representative of the majority of the buildings located in Athens;
  • estimation of the feasibility of a more wide application of the selected technologies and strategies in the greater Athens area;
  • promotion of information campaigns to Athens citizens / energy consumers.
