Description
In the course of this project information was collected on municipal solid waste management practices applied in Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia and Hungary. Main task of the project was to identify methods applied in managing biodegradable solid waste, in the light of the recently issued landfill directive and the expected –at that time- new directive defining Compost Quality parameters.
Apart from assessing the situation at the time, different scenarios were prepared to enable the consultant to carry out future projections and estimates regarding the tasks set by the Landfill Directive on diverting the biodegradable waste from landfills. In addition, the consultant reviewed the available technologies applying on treatment of biodegradable waste. Composting and Anaerobic Digestion were suggested for different types of biodegradable waste, following cost – benefit analysis of the different options, as the most appropriate technologies.
