At  the ‘Water & Waste’ Greek online magazine (issue May 2021, pages 14-15)

, the Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Management Plan developed for the Beirut Port area, after the explosion in August 2020, is presented.

LDK Consultants’ team of leading multi-disciplinary disaster waste experts from Lebanon and the rest of the world, was rapidly mobilised after the blasts, to ensure that the quantities of hazardous wastes as well as, materials and substances containing chemicals and asbestos, which entail both public health and environmental risks, were properly managed and disposed.
The project was developed through the European Union ongoing Waste Management project in record time (3 months), overseeing 16 waste treatment plants, while considering all technical, institutional and legal aspects.

The Plan’s Tasks:
• Project Governance: Establishing management, approvals, and work plan
• Site Clearance: Works required to complete the site clearance carrying on from the ongoing demolition works and supporting the complex demolition and clear-up works of the Silos.
• Beirut C&D Waste Management: Support to the Ministry of Environment towards identifying appropriate C&D waste management and disposal options.
• Institutional Strengthening / Legislative Support: Support MoE on C&D waste and hazardous waste management.

The Beirut Port explosion caused more than 200 deaths, 6.000 injuries, left 300.000 people without a home and caused widespread damage, both within the Port and outside in the city of Beirut.
