Cyprus Tourism

Cyprus has always been a popular tourist destination and tourism is the driving force of the Cypriot economy, contributing about 20% of the GDP. Over the next decade, tourism in Cyprus is expected to grow by around 30%, reaching 5 million arrivals. Yet such growth should be managed in such a way as to avoid overcrowding and any harmful impact on the environment, the quality of tourism experience and the local population.

In order to manage these challenges and take advantage of the growth opportunities, the Deputy Ministry of Tourism of Cyprus took on the task to develop the National Tourism Strategy 2030, to reinvent the country’s tourist infrastructure and cultivate sustainable and environmentally friendly services provided.

A year ago, LDK Consultants, as a leader of a consortium, prepared and just delivered in April 2023, the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the National Tourism Strategy 2030 of Cyprus and the Carrying Capacity Assessment, to ensure the sustainable development of Cypriot tourism in a beneficial way to the economy, society and the environment.

These two studies include recommendations, corrective measures and provide the tools for the monitoring of environmental and other resources of the destination.

These key sustainability performance indicators are indeed crucial for the management of the ‘invisible’ cost of tourism and climate change effects in Cyprus.

LDK Consultants is proud to support the vision of this newly launched National Tourism Strategy 2030, as this vision has become the ‘compass’ for further development of tourism of the country.

It has become clear that the issue is not limited to simply increase the number of tourist arrivals in country, but the destination to be addressed with a holistic development and the management of tourism to be performed in a sustainable way, so that the future visitors and above all future residents to continue to enjoy their lives in the island.
