Type of Services

Provide services by LDK included:

  • collection of environmental data and organisation of a GIS linked database, including discharges, pollution control infrastructure and treatment facilities, water quality, hydrological data, etc;
  • implementation of EU wastewater legislation, particularly the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, as well as environmental, social and financial aspects of investments in WWTPs;
  • definition of effluent standards for wastewater discharges;
  • preparation of Draft Pollution Prevention Plans for river basin;
  • preparation of prioritised investment plan to meet water quality objectives;
  • preparation of Draft Monitoring Plans for each river basin, in accordance with Water Framework Directive requirements (2000/60/EC).

Description

The aim of the project was to conduct a detailed feasibility study for identification of the sensitive areas in the river basins of the rivers Mesta, Struma, Arda, Tundja and Maritsa, in order to define the satisfaction of the criteria of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC. In particular, the tasks of the project included:

  • the identification of sensitive areas in the five river basins;
  • the definition of subsequent effluent standards;
  • the preparation of draft pollution prevention and monitoring programmes in accordance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.

Furthermore, key issues addressed during the project included:

  • effluent standards for discharges into sensitive areas, in compliance with the requirements of Directive 91/271/EEC;
  • assessment of local environmental, technical and economic conditions for the definition of realistic effluent standards;
  • identification of specific measures to achieve water quality requirements, as resulted with the conclusion of previous tasks of the project;
  • in terms of improvement of water quality, proposals for the Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)that must be constructed, with proximal timetables and costs;
  • careful consideration given in prioritising the WWTPs that need to be constructed, taking into account environmental, social and financial aspects;
  • specific measures to achieve requirements for the water quality;
  • timetable for the implementation of these measures;
  • scale of the necessary financial resources.
