Regulatory research project regarding the transportation of Directive 2012/19/EC (WEEE Recast Directive) into national legislation of 27 European Countries – (the case of Greece and Cyprus)

Type of Services

  • Reporting on how new legislation is implemented in Greece and Cyprus – i.e. the process of implementing legislation, organisations involved, names of relevant contacts etc.
  • Tracking the development and implementation of new /revised WEEE legislation in Greece and Cyprus, by interviewing the relevant national bodies in regular intervals (once monthly).
  • Red Flag reports, on significant developments made, towards the implementation of the Directive (major relevant steps).

Description

The WEEE Directive sets out specific requirements in relation to the recycling of electronic waste. In particular it requires 'product producers' to finance collection and recycling of WEEE. The Directive was originally published in 2003 and Member State/Country Governments were required to implement national legislation by 2005. The Directive was revised (recast) in July 2012. Member States now have to revise their national legislation and make changes to reflect the revisions in the Directive. They need to make changes by January 2014.

Each country already has existing legislation on WEEE or electronic waste (which implements the 2003 Directive).

The general project focuses on the new /draft legislation which is required to transpose the Revised WEEE Directive in each Member State; this new legislation being in its early stages of development.

This project focuses on the case of Greece and Cyprus, aiming at presenting the process of each country, for implementing the WEEE Recast Directive into national legislation.

The presentation of the situation would be made through conducting interviews of representatives of the relevant national bodies for implementing the WEEE Recast, describing the process and steps to be followed for its implementation, as well as taking down planned milestones achievement and possible consultation meetings dates.

One of the major objectives of this project was to record the interpretation of WEEE producers' definition in each country and to translate their future obligations into corresponding actions and requirements.
